[edit] The Manor of Sleep
These are the ghosts of Fatal Frame 3 who have been either victims or sources of the corruption from rituals such as "The Piercing of the Soul" and the gruesome burial of carpenters alive who built the manor in order not to spread the secret of the manor. However, some ghosts can be found in All of God's Village (Kei Amakura) and Himuro Mansion (Miku Hinasaki). Some of the ghosts when killed murmur something related to their purpose, situation, or death such as the hidden face men saying something about sacrifices is their purpose as seen in a file and the woman brushing says something about waiting so long as seen in a file.
[edit] Hatred Spirits
And again, like the first games, these spirits attack any living person or are considered neutral but a certain few of them seem to help.
[edit] Turned Back Man
Type: Neutral
This is one of the "Hidden Face Men" you'll be encountering later on. He won't attack you in the Prologue part. He is found in the tatami room and disappears once you get in.
[edit] Mother and Daughter (Makie & Kozue Kuzuhara)
Hour First Encountered: 1
Area First Encountered: 1F Manor of Sleep, Hearth Room
Type: Neutral at times & vengeful
Description: These are the spirits of a mother (Makie) and her child (Kozue) who are looking for "Daddy (the daughter's father)." They usually blame Rei for killing "Daddy." Sometimes they even ask Rei if she has found "him." Kozue caused the accidental death of her father but hid it to hide her guilt. She and her mother continue to search for him to hide away their sorrow. According to a news article, they have been searching for Kozue's father about everyday. And one time, a witness saw them entering their house and when he knocked at the door, nobody answered. When he went in, all he saw were two separate piles of black soot. If they come in a pair, Makie usually strangles the player and Kozue watches crying and blaming the player as the killer. The daughter, if alone, is harder to kill since she teleports rapidly and creates darkness.
[edit] Men in White
Hour First Encountered: Prologue
Area First Encountered: Hall of Tatami
Type: Vengeful
They usually attack in pairs or solo. They strike unarmed or with a small spear. They wear tall court hats. They are spirits of carpenters who built the manor. They were ordered to be buried once the manor is complete in order that the manor's secret won't be discovered.
[edit] Hidden Face Man (Tengai Narumi)
Hour First Encountered: Prologue
Area First Encountered: 1F Manor of Sleep, Barred Hallway
Type: Vengeful
They are the spirits of the Master Builder who visit the Manor of Sleep to offer sacrifices or to spread the Kuze family bloodline. The rules state that men weren't allowed to enter the manor but the head of the Kuze family declared that they had to let the Kuze daughters marry male travellers to spread the Kuze bloodline. They wear tall court hats and their faces are hidden with veils. They attack with large machetes although the weapons are listed as axes in the game. After all the carpenters are dead, he grows crazy over sacrificing that he committed suicide in order for a sacrifice. And when killed, they shout "MORE SACRIFICES, MORE BLOOD!!!"
[edit] Female Survivor (Yoshino Takigawa)
Hour First Encountered: 1
Area First Encountered: Hearth Room
Type: Neutral & vengeful
Description: The only survivor of a plane crash, she managed to survive when she fell of the airplane and landed on a giant cushion. She was brought to the hospital but has a healthy condition with minor injuries such as burns and minor bruises. She suddenly had the fear of sleep, seeing that she is in a mansion with all her dead relatives and her dead fiance. She even sees the figure of a blue woman. Doctors in the hospital started hearing her murmuring, crying, or singing lullabies. She even hurts herself to stay awake. She is first seen at the hearth room in the manor. Rei visits her in the hospital after Miku calls Rei to see her in the hospital. Yoshino is reportedly in a coma for several weeks. When Rei came near her, Yoshino woke up and a tattoo started emanating from her body, the tattoo Rei saw on the blue woman in lattice and the one growing on her own body. In the dream world, she sees Yoshino crying in a room. And three shadows with deformed faces appear. After Rei kills the three shadows, Yoshino attacks Rei and she now has a tattoo on her whole body. When Rei wakes up from the dream, she sees a glimpse of Yoshino holding her body. Also, another incident of Yoshino's appearance is that after Rei develops the photos after that dream, a shadow of Yoshino appears in Yuu's altar room. If killed, she moans, "You're not like me....."
[edit] Priestess Girls (Hisame/Shigure/Minamo/Amane Kuze)
Hour fist encountered: III
Area first encountered: 1F Manor of Sleep, Doll Altar East
Type: Vengeful (except for Amane)
Girls who wield mallets and wooden stakes. Also known as the Handmaidens, they were supposed serve the Priestess as well as sacrificing certain people by impaling them. They are the spirits of little girls who are supposed to nail dolls in their doll altar. These dolls represent gods, and the act of impaling them as well as the song the Handmaidens sing is intended to soothe the Priestesses in times of restlessness.. One of these priestesses will be encountered inside the doll altar. Though their personalities vary, they all attack in the same way - either by attempting to hammer a stake through the player, or by impaling the player's foot, not only doing continuous medium damage but also leaving the player defenseless against other attacking ghosts. There are four in all, each representing a cardinal direction:
Amane Kuze - the most important of the four Handmaidens in the storyline, Amane waited personally on Reika as she prepared to become the next Priestess. However, she discovered through her mother, Kyouka, that she had a half-brother, Kaname, former friend and lover of the Priestess. Acting against the commandments set to the Kuze family, Amane led Kaname to the Chamber of Thorns to see Reika one last time. The Family Head, enraged, ordered Hisame to impale her as punishment. Because she too lost her brother, Amane sympathizes with Miku and so guides her through the Manor in the hope that Miku can break the curse, freeing Reika and Kaname from their eternal suffering. She is the only Handmaiden who does not attack any character in canon, and can only be fought in "Mission Mode". Amane represents the South, and can be identified by her plaited hair with two ponytails at the back. It is she who writes the "Blue Diaries."
Hisame Kuze - The oldest of the Handmaidens. Although she is known as the most "dutiful," Hisame could better be described as the most callous. She sees no wrong in the mandates given the Kuze family and follows the creed faithfully and without fail. Despite being adopted into the Kuze family, she is undoubtedly the favorite of Yashuu Kuze, as well as the most trusted of the four. She agrees to impale Amane without any misgiving, as well as Shigure and Minamo after Reika's escape. She is even shown laughing over Amane's impalement. Because she was chosen as the last sacrifice, she found herself alone in the Manor after everyone else had died. In her Red Diary, she felt that she would like to "sleep forever," and likely became one of the first to fall to Reika's curse. She is represents North, and might be described as Amane's opposite. She can be identified by her long, unbound hair with bangs. She tells the player that he/she can't leave.
Shigure Kuze - Shigure, though a Handmaiden, is fairly unimportant to the storyline. She, like Hisame and Minamo, was not a Kuze by birth, but was adopted into the family. Shigure is not given much development - she merely states in her Green diary that she is sorry for what she must do to Amane. Although she eventually became tormented by her guilt over what she had to do, she did not let her misgivings to interfere with her orders as had Amane. Although she hesitates most of her duties, she still follows the commandments. By order of the Family Head, Hisame impaled her in a failed attempt to contain Reika's wrath. Shigure represents the East, and can be identified by her partially bound hair. She screams rapidly when killed.
Minamo Kuze - Minamo is also fairly unimportant, and like Hisame and Shigure, was adopted into the Kuze family. Though not so unfeeling as Hisame, she states in her diary that she is bored by only impaling dolls and aspires to impaling a real Priestess. She, apparently, willfully keeps her conscience clean by following the Commandments by which the Kuze family lives and not allowing her own heart to be clouded by doubt or guilt, and so has no objection to her friend Amane being impaled. She even laughed with Hisame over Amane's fate. Whether she felt the same way about her own impalement is not stated, but is probably a different story entirely. In any case, she too was impaled by Hisame in a failed attempt to restrain Reika's increasingly malicious spirit. She is identified by her short, clipped hair with a flower on her left side and eerily cheerful expression. She represents East and writes the Gray Diary. She calls the player a traitor to all when killed.
[edit] Stroller Grandma
Hour firt encountered:
Area first encountered: (either through doing a certain task or appears randomly in the Rope Hallway)
Type: Vengeful
Very little is known about her. Unable to accept her grandchild's death, she secretly took her deceased grandchild from the grave. She is known to be very difficult to kill and at times, can kill the player at one ram with her baby stroller.
[edit] Engraved Men (Moriya Family)
Hour first encountered: VI
Area first encountered: (depending on which you encounter first)
Type: Vengeful
These are still the spirits of carpenters, however have tattoos covered on their body. They are much harder in than the normal carpenter and wield hatchets. They are a bit like the hidden face men. In their first encounters, killing each one of them will let them drop a Moriya tome, showing what happened to the carpenters and the human columns of blood. It also explains about the Moriya clan. They were ordered to kill each other and the survivor would be killed by Tengai Narumi.
[edit] The Rope Man
Hour first encountered:
Area first encountered: Dirt Hallway (All God's Village)
Type: Vengeful
The Kusabi of Fatal Frame 2 is back. He runs fast and his face has missing eyeballs which makes him look like a skeleton. In the first encounter, he is invulnerable. He either bites or throws skulls at the player.
[edit] Black Shadows
Hour first encountered: I
Area first encountered: 2F Manor of Sleep, Room with Blind
Type: vengeful
These spirits have deformed faces and have nothing on their body except deep shadows. They attack by hitting their heads. They are minions of the Female Survivor(means that if the Female Survivor dies, they die too). Although Rei, Miku and Kei all see these ghosts as the inhuman figures that they are, the Female Survivor (Yoshino Takigawa) seems to see them as her lover and family who died when their plane crashed. She also seems to "hear" them berating her for her unintentional survival, this likely being the primary cause she has for believing she was "wrong" to have survived.
[edit] Woman Brushing (Kyouka Kuze)
Hour first encountered:
Area first encountered: 2F Manor of Sleep, Kimono Room
Type: Vengeful
A woman who had long hair. Mother to both Kaname and Amane and daughter to Yashuu Kuze, she fell in love with a folklorist who had been invited to stay the winter for the purpose of bearing a child to further the line. She enjoyed having him take pictures of her with his camera, and enjoyed hearing him tell her how beautiful her hair was. However, her lover never came back (likely having been killed in secret by order of the Family Head for attempting to escape with her). Waiting for her lover in the kimono room, she pinned her hair for her lover to see, even after her death when the Rift opened. In the kimono room, she seems to be swimming instead of diving and is very hard to shoot. Although loud and frightening, she is a relatively ineffictive ghost, more annoying than threatening even to inexperienced players. If killed, she moans something about her lover, Akito or about waiting. Her appearance also varies. At first, when unwounded by the camera, she has a perfect face, but when shot by the camera for a certain amount of times, her face is bleeding and one of her eyes are yellow.
[edit] Needle Woman (The Engraver)
Hour first encountered:
Area first encountered: Flickering hallway
Type: Vengeful
These are the spirits of tattoo artists who engrave the holly of the Priestess. Though there are two in all, there is no development in either of their personalities, and so the Needle Woman might be described as something of a "grunt." She is blind so she may see the Priestess's dream even while awake, her hands pierced to feel the Priestess's pain.
[edit] Mio Amakura
Hour first encountered: Barred Hallway, Confinement Room
Area first encountered:
Type: Neutral
Mio, the protagonist of Fatal Frame 2 isn't a ghost, but is listed in the secret ghost list.
[edit] Mayu Amakura
Hour first encountered:
Area first encountered: Barred Hallway, Confinement Room
Type: Good
There is some speculation that the crimson butterflies guarding the butterfly room Mio went in could be Mayu. In Fatal Frame 2, when Mayu died, she took the form of a crimson butterfly and looked over Mio in the end. The crimson butterflies help lead Kei to the right directions or to avoid certain ghosts like the Rope Man.
In the "Standing Girl" photo, there are two girls instead of one, only Mio. Since they both identical, we can assume that the standing girl is Mayu--surrounded by butterflies.
[edit] Kuze Family Head (Yashuu Kuze)
Hour first encountered:
Area first encountered: Hall of Tatami
Type: Vengeful
This is the spirit of the head of the Kuze family. She is first seen in the hall of tatami, seeming to be in secrecy. Once approached, she has a lot of hands levitating around her and commands them to be thrown on the player. She can't be hurt by the Camera Obscura in the first two encounters. The strongest film possible is very effective against her.
Yashuu Kuze is the mother of Kyouka and the grandmother of Amane. The appointed Kuze Family Head, hers is the task of overseeing the lives and deaths of the Priestesses and overseeing the continuation of the Kuze line. She would show no mercy to anyone, inside or outside the Kuze line, who would disobey the Commandments. Yashuu herself taught the Handmaidens and also hand-picked Reika to succeed the role of Priestess. She also ordered the mass sacrifice of the Shrine Carpenters (Men in White, Hidden-Faced Man and Engraved Men). After Reika's outbreak, she perished from Reika's reflected Holly, and so became the very first direct victim of the curse. The hands protruding from the background behind her is similar to the appearance of the vengeful ghost of Kirie from the original Fatal Frame. Her voice gives a low tone and at times, eerily blames Amane or talks to Tengai Narumi. She can be heard, eerily singing the lullaby of the Handmaidens.
[edit] Rope Priestess (Kizuna Himuro)
Hour first encountered: IV
Area first encountered: 1F Himuro Mansion, Rope Palace
Type: Vengeful
A corrupted soul of a priestess in Himuro Mansion. She was tied to the mechanism with ropes in the rope palace and men pushed the mechanism with ropes to rotate the machine and it tore her apart. She is seen with half of the body and the face deformed. Some fans wrongly refer to her as Kirie, but Kizuna was the former rope priestess before Kirie.
[edit] Tattooed Priestess(Reika Kuze)
Hour First Encountered: Prologue
Area First Encountered: Barred Hallway
Type: Vengeful
Description: She is known as the "Sleeping Priestess" like what the lullaby of the handmaidens say. The main anatagonist of the game. She is faced usually throughout Rei's dreams. She can only be fought at the last level. Reika, as the final boss can kill the player in one hit if she activates a miasma, wherein the best action the player can do is keep running in different directions in order for her not to catch the player.
[edit] Crawling Woman (Kiriko Asanuma)
Hour First Encountered: VII
Area First Encountered: B1 Manor of Sleep, Under the Floor
Type: Vengeful
Description: This poor girl is locked in the closet in her house by her mother. In the closet, she witnessed her whole family's death... She was taken to the hospital after being found by the police. She is in a state of shock due to being heavily traumatized in witnessing her family's death. Months later, her body disappeared and only black soot was left, just like Yoshino Takigawa's and Makie & Kozue Kuzuhara's bodies. She usually appears under the floor.
She gives the attitude of the ghost from Ju-on: The Grudge. She seems to snarl and sniff loudly when encountered.
