The Camera Obscura, as seen in Fatal Frame III: The TormentedThe Camera Obscura (ŽË‰e‹@, Shaeiki?) is a device used in the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series of video games to vanquish spirits. In retrospect, it is not safe at all as it ultimately creates a link with the user and the spirit. If used carelessly, it can even allow the spirits to gain the upper hand on the user.
[edit] Origin
The "Camera Obscura" is a special camera created by Dr. Kunihiko Asou (a paternal ancestor of FF2's protagonists Mayu and Mio Amakura) to capture supernatural phenomenon that could not be seen with the naked eye. It was designed to photograph visions of the past and spirit entities, but it was a prototype and its functions had not been fully tested. Photographing "things that ordinary people couldn't see" with this camera had an exorcismal effect.
[edit] Usage
Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who had come to investigate All God's Village, borrowed this camera from Dr. Asou to photograph the village's rumored Forbidden Ritual. Dr. Kunihiko Asou was a folklorist who studied the spirit world. He modified the latest gadgets of his time, the camera, radio, and projector, trying to create a machine that could capture supernatural phenomenon. He was shunned by the academic world but friends with Makabe.
[edit] Films
The camera obscura uses films as its ammunitions. These are the film types:
Type-07 Film : The weakest film of the series. The film is old, and virtually no exorcising effect. This film appears at FF2 and FF3.
Type-14 Film : A weak film. The film is musty, and have a minimum amount of exorcising effect.
Type-37 Film : A moderate film. Appears at FF.
Type-61 Film : A moderate film and an equivalent of FF's Type-37 film. The film is charged with strong will, and has a moderate exorcising effect.
Type-74 Film : A strong film. Appears at FF.
Type-90 Film : The strongest film at FF, reduced to the second strongest film at FF2 and FF3. It is specially sealed, and has a large exorcising effect.
Type-00/Zero Film : The strongest film. It is very specially sealed, and has the largest exorcising effect. Appears at FF2 and FF3.
